If you’re considering a newborn photo session, it’s normal to have questions about timing, posing, and what kind of package makes the most sense for your family. Newborn photography is a special experience, and understanding a few basics ahead of time can make the process feel much easier.

With the right planning, a newborn session can feel calm, simple, and meaningful.

Understanding Newborn Photography Sessions: Why Time, Posing, and Packages Matter

When booking a newborn photography session, one of the most common questions parents ask is: Why does a newborn session take so long? Another is: What is the difference between a Swaddled Newborn Session and a Classic Newborn Session, and why are they priced differently?

The answer comes down to how newborn photography actually works.

Newborn photography is very different from traditional portrait photography. We are working with a tiny human who has their own needs, reflexes, feeding schedule, and comfort level. Babies cannot follow directions, hold a pose on command, or understand that we have a photography session scheduled.

Every newborn session is designed around the baby's comfort and safety, and the packages are structured around the amount of handling, posing, preparation, and work required.

Let's explain what really happens behind the scenes.

Why Does a Newborn Session Have an Estimated Duration of Up to 3 Hours?

When you book a Classic Newborn Session with an estimated duration of up to 3 hours, you are not purchasing 3 hours of continuous photography. You are reserving up to 3 hours of my professional time to accomplish the photography included in your package.

There is a significant difference.

A newborn may need to eat several times during a session. They may need diaper changes, become uncomfortable, wake up unexpectedly, or simply need to be held and soothed.

Unlike older children or adults, newborns cannot be asked to cooperate for just a few more minutes.

During a typical Classic Newborn Session, we may need to:

  • Feed and burp the baby before beginning.

  • Allow time for the baby to fall into a comfortable, deeper sleep.

  • Carefully remove clothing without waking them.

  • Position tiny hands, fingers, feet, and legs.

  • Transition between different poses and photography setups.

  • Change outfits, wraps, or accessories.

  • Stop for additional feedings or diaper changes.

  • Soothe the baby when they become unsettled.

  • Wait until the baby is comfortable enough to continue.

Sometimes a baby settles in 5 minutes. Other times, it can take 30 minutes or longer.

Every time we disturb a sleeping baby, we risk having to repeat the settling process.

This is why a pose that takes only a few minutes to photograph may require considerably more time to prepare.

Some babies sleep peacefully through most of their session. Others are more alert, sensitive to movement, or need frequent feeding and comforting.

We cannot predict this before meeting your baby.

The estimated timeframe allows us to work patiently instead of rushing a newborn through poses simply to stay on a strict schedule.

Why a Swaddled Newborn Session Is Swaddled Only

Swaddled Newborn Sessions are specifically designed to be simpler, shorter, and less disruptive for the baby.

The entire concept of this package is that the baby remains fully swaddled throughout the photography session.

Swaddling provides gentle containment and can help reduce the startle reflex that frequently wakes newborns when their arms or legs move unexpectedly.

Once a baby is comfortably wrapped and settled, we can photograph different arrangements without repeatedly undressing or fully repositioning them.

For example, we may photograph the baby in a basket, on a soft surface, or in another carefully prepared setup while keeping the baby wrapped.

This does not mean every photograph looks identical. We can create variety through backgrounds, wraps, textures, accessories, camera angles, and styling.

However, the baby remains swaddled in every setup.

This is what makes the session more efficient and allows us to offer it at a lower price than our Classic Newborn Session.

Why Can't Parents Bring Their Own Outfits to a Swaddled Session?

This is an important distinction.

Parents sometimes ask whether they can bring a special newborn outfit to use during their Swaddled Session.

The answer is no, because outfit photography requires a different workflow from swaddled photography.

To photograph a baby wearing an outfit, we generally need to:

  1. Remove the wrap.

  2. Undress or change the baby.

  3. Put on the selected outfit.

  4. Reposition the baby to properly show the clothing.

  5. Settle the baby again if they wake or become uncomfortable.

  6. Potentially repeat the process when transitioning to another setup.

At that point, we are no longer performing the photography process that the Swaddled Session was designed around.

Even one outfit change can significantly increase the amount of handling and settling time required.

Some newborn outfits also do not fit properly, may bunch up around the baby's face, or may not be suitable for safe newborn posing.

Allowing outfit changes in a Swaddled Session would effectively turn it into a different type of session while retaining the lower Swaddled Session price.

For that reason, personal outfits and unsaddled poses are not included in this package.

If photographing your baby in a special outfit is important to you, the Classic Newborn Session is the appropriate choice.

What Makes a Classic Newborn Session Different?

The Classic Newborn Session offers a much broader photography experience focused on the baby.

Unlike a Swaddled Session, which is built around keeping the baby wrapped, a Classic Session includes the opportunity for both swaddled and unswaddled photography, different outfits, and more detailed newborn posing.

Both our Swaddled and Classic Newborn Sessions are baby-only packages. Family portraits are not automatically included in either package but can be added for an additional fee.

We typically begin with whichever approach is most appropriate for the baby's condition and comfort.

Some babies arrive sleepy and are ready for posed photographs. Others need to be wrapped and settled before we can begin.

The Classic Session gives us the flexibility to move between these approaches.

Unswaddled Posing Requires Much More Work

Photographs of newborns sleeping with their tiny hands tucked beneath their cheeks or their legs gently curled may look effortless.

They are not.

Unswaddled posing requires careful support, attention to the baby's natural flexibility, and patience.

A baby may move their hands, stretch their legs, turn their head, startle, or wake when we make even a small adjustment.

We may spend several minutes positioning the baby only to have them wake up just before the photograph is taken.

Then the process begins again.

Some poses may not be suitable for a particular baby, and we never force a pose simply because it was planned.

Our priority is always the baby's safety and comfort.

Outfit Changes Add More Than Just a Few Minutes

Changing a newborn's outfit is not the same as changing an older child's clothing.

Removing one outfit, dressing the baby in another, and adjusting the clothing for photography can disturb their sleep.

Newborns may react to changes in temperature, touch, or positioning.

After an outfit change, we may need another feeding, additional soothing, or time for the baby to fall asleep again.

This is why even a single outfit change can add considerable time to a session.

Can Family Portraits Be Added to Either Package?

Yes. Family portraits are available as an optional add-on to both our Swaddled and Classic Newborn Sessions.

Adding family portraits involves additional preparation, lighting adjustments, and posing to safely photograph parents or siblings with the newborn.

If siblings are participating, we generally photograph them at the beginning of the session so they do not have to wait through the newborn posing process.

Adding family portraits to a Swaddled Session does not change the newborn posing included in that package. The baby remains swaddled for the newborn photography portion.

Likewise, adding family portraits to a Classic Session does not change the distinction between the packages. The Classic Session already includes both wrapped and unwrapped newborn posing, while family photographs remain a separate add-on.

This allows families to choose the newborn photography style they prefer and independently decide whether they would also like family portraits.

Why Are Newborn-Only Sessions Still Given Longer Estimated Timeframes?

Another common misconception is that a newborn-only session should take very little time because parents and siblings are not being photographed.

However, the baby is usually the most time-intensive part of any newborn session.

Not including family portraits does not eliminate feeding breaks, diaper changes, soothing, careful posing, or the need to wait for the baby to settle.

The amount of time required depends more on the type of newborn posing than on the number of people being photographed.

A baby-only session with multiple unswaddled poses can require considerably more time than a session featuring several simple, fully wrapped setups.

This is why our newborn-only packages still have estimated timeframes that allow for the baby's individual needs.

The difference between packages is not simply how many people appear in the photographs. It is the type and complexity of photography being performed.

Why Is There a Price Difference Between Swaddled and Classic Newborn Sessions?

Our newborn packages are not priced by the hour.

They are priced according to the work involved, the complexity of the photography, the setups included, and the final images provided.

Swaddled Newborn SessionClassic Newborn Session
Baby remains fully wrapped Swaddled and unswaddled photography
No outfit changes Outfit changes included
Simpler wrapped posing More detailed newborn posing
Fewer handling transitions More handling and repositioning
Baby-only package Baby-only package
Family portraits available as an add-on Family portraits available as an add-on
More predictable workflow Greater variation in settling time
Lower package price Higher package price

A Swaddled Session costs less because it is intentionally designed to minimize disturbances, simplify posing, and reduce the number of transitions.

A Classic Session costs more because it requires significantly more hands-on work, preparation, patience, posing expertise, and flexibility.

The higher Classic package price is not because family portraits are included. They are not. The difference is entirely related to the more complex newborn photography experience.

The price difference does not mean that one package is better than the other. They are simply different photography services.

A Swaddled Session is an excellent choice for parents who love cozy, wrapped newborn portraits and prefer a simpler session.

A Classic Session is better suited to families who want more variety, unswaddled poses, and outfits.

Family portraits can be added to whichever newborn package you select.

Why Don't We Reduce the Price if a Session Finishes Early?

Because newborn photography is not billed by the hour.

When you book a package, you are selecting a specific photography service and its included deliverables.

If your baby sleeps beautifully and we accomplish all the planned setups faster than expected, that does not mean less professional work or value was provided.

It means your baby cooperated well and we were able to complete the session efficiently.

Likewise, if your baby needs extra soothing and we use the full estimated timeframe, the package price does not increase simply because the session took longer.

You are paying for the finished photography experience and images, not for the number of minutes your baby spends in front of the camera.

The estimated time is the amount of time reserved to complete the session, not a guaranteed minimum or a promise of continuous shooting.

Why Can't We Just Add One Unswaddled Pose to a Swaddled Session?

It may sound like a small request, but there is no way to guarantee that one additional pose will take only a few minutes.

Unwrapping the baby may wake them. Repositioning them may trigger their startle reflex. Getting them back to sleep could take much longer than expected.

Once we begin adding outfits and unswaddled poses, we change the entire structure of the session.

Our packages have clearly defined inclusions so that every family receives the service they booked and the pricing remains consistent and fair.

If you want the flexibility of both wrapped and unwrapped photographs, please choose the Classic Newborn Session from the beginning.

Why Do We Recommend Photographing Newborns at 4–12 Days Old?

We generally recommend scheduling newborn photography when babies are approximately 4–12 days old.

During this early stage, many newborns tend to sleep more deeply and naturally curl into positions similar to those they held before birth.

As babies grow, they often become more alert, stretch more frequently, and may be less comfortable with certain curled poses.

This does not mean an older newborn cannot be photographed beautifully.

However, the posing approach may need to change. Older or more alert babies often do better with simpler, swaddled photography.

Even within the recommended age range, every baby is different, and no particular pose or number of setups can be guaranteed.

Safety Always Comes Before a Photograph

Newborn photography requires patience, experience, and an understanding of newborn behavior.

We never force babies into positions that are uncomfortable or unsafe. We do not offer the froggy pose, and any necessary composites are used for safety rather than to create unrealistic posing expectations.

If a baby is uncomfortable, hungry, crying, or needs a break, we stop.

A successful newborn session is not measured by how many poses we can squeeze into a specific amount of time.

It is measured by the quality of the photographs we can safely create while respecting the baby's needs.

Choosing the Right Newborn Photography Package

Before booking, consider what matters most to you.

If you love the look of a peacefully sleeping baby wrapped in soft fabrics, with beautifully coordinated backgrounds and minimal disruption, a Swaddled Newborn Session may be exactly what you need.

If you envision tiny hands and feet visible in different poses, special newborn outfits, and more elaborate setups, the Classic Newborn Session is the better choice.

Both packages focus on the newborn, and both offer the option to add family portraits for an additional fee.

Neither newborn package is designed to be customized into the other. Each has a different workflow, scope, and price for a reason.

Final Thoughts

Newborn photography is not simply placing a baby on a backdrop and taking pictures.

Behind every photograph are preparation, styling, lighting, careful handling, patience, and sometimes a great deal of waiting.

A 3-hour estimate does not mean 3 hours of photography. A Swaddled Session does not include outfit changes. And a lower-priced package does not include the services of a higher-priced package.

These distinctions exist because different types of newborn photography require different amounts of work.

At Reda Juodis Photography, our goal is to provide a safe, calm, baby-led experience while creating beautiful images that reflect the package you have selected.

We work around your baby, not the clock.
